Good Samaritan Hospice Needs

Family Support Volunteers

Good Samaritan Hospice will offer training for new volunteers to serve the New River Valley starting July 27.  The training sessions will be held twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm for four weeks, ending August 24.  They will be held at the hospice office at 1160 Moose Drive NW, Christiansburg.

Hospice Family Support Volunteers work directly with our terminally ill patients and their families visiting for 2 to 4 hours each week.  They are often asked to sit with patients while their families run errands or take needed time away.  They bring loving companionship to homebound patients or those in facilities.  No experience is needed, only a caring heart.

Applications may be obtained by calling our office at (540) 381-3171 and asking for Lindy Waterbeck.  Or you may email Lindy at lwaterbeck@goodsamhospice.org.  Deadline for pre-registration for the New River Valley training is July 22.

Volunteers are also needed for clerical support or to answer phones in the Christiansburg office.  No formal training is required to assist in these areas, just on-the-job orientation.  They may begin any time of the year on a schedule of two or four-hour time slots Monday through Friday.  They provide a great deal of support to our staff.

Special Project volunteers can choose various one-time or short-term projects in which to support our mission.  They may bake sweet treats for patient birthdays, help with craft projects, help with marketing, yard work, fundraising, or special events and fairs.  Most do not require training.
