Many people ask what they can do to help ensure that hospice’s “special way of caring” will always be available to those who need it. At Good Samaritan, we rely heavily on gifts of time and talent to meet the needs of our community.  There is a real need for men and women willing to consider volunteer opportunities with our organization.  Whether or not you personally have volunteer experience is not important.  We provide complete training through our office.  Many of our volunteers can say:  "Hospice was my first volunteer position and it gave me a whole new outlook on life and living."

What Volunteers Do
Family support volunteers work directly with hospice patients and families, providing companionship, respite, and practical help such as running errands or transportation. Volunteers may also be involved in community projects and office work.  As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to learn new skills, share your ideas and talents, and find personal fulfillment by giving back to the community.

Vital Members of the Team
Volunteers are an integral part of our total commitment to providing quality medical and supportive services for people in the final stages of a life-limiting illness.  Volunteers work closely with an interdisciplinary team that includes staff nurses, social workers, home health aides, office staff and clergy, to provide care and support to patients and family members.

Types of Volunteers

  • Family Support Volunteer - As a family support volunteer, you will be a special friend to hospice patients and families in their home or place of residence.  Prior to serving in this capacity, you will participate in our comprehensive training program to become familiar with the hospice concept of care, gain experience with communication skills, and learn more about the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients and families.

  • Office Volunteer - As an office volunteer, you will provide support services such as answering telephones, filing, assisting with mailings, working on the computer, and other special tasks.

  • Special Projects Volunteer - As a projects volunteer, you will have the opportunity to help with special projects including fund raising, mass mailings, community education and other special events.  You may also volunteer your assistance in personal areas of expertise such as baking, yard work and sewing.
